A Special Multi-Part Series: Guidance on Paid Family Leave Laws

Please join us for a multi-part series on the ever-changing legal landscape that surrounds paid family and medical leave issues. This series aims to offer pragmatic guidance and compliance solutions for employers in multiple jurisdictions where the legal requirements may vary dramatically from one location to the next and where one-size-fits-all policies may not be effective. See below for more information on the topics we will cover in the latest installment of our paid family and medical leave webinar series. We look forward to your participation.

Part IX: Paid Family and Medical Leave Law Comparisons, Challenges and Federal Outlook

The country’s statutory paid family leave (PFL) and paid family and medical leave (PFML) patchwork is in a seemingly constant state of flux and expansion. Two new jurisdictions – Minnesota and Maine – have added laws in recent months. And last month, Oregon’s PFML program went live. While keeping up with the latest developments is important for multi-state and nationwide employers, it is equally important to keep in mind how these mandates compare to one another, the challenges that inconsistent substantive standards across PFML laws creates for both employers and employees, and how the federal government is reacting to the increased proliferation of PFML laws with unique components.

Part IX of the Seyfarth Paid Family Leave Webinar Series examines these topics with the help of a new infographic that was jointly prepared by Seyfarth and American Benefits Council. Specifically, topics that are covered during the webinar include:

  1. Overview of the current nationwide PFL and PFML law landscape.
  2. Review of a new, unique PFL and PFML laws infographic that addresses and compares PFML laws across four select key substantive areas – (1) qualifying absences, (2) covered family members, (3) length of benefits and duration of leave, (4) amount of pay.
  3. Challenges and complexities for employers and employees created by discrepancies and dissimilarities between state PFL and PFML laws.
  4. Updates on federal PFML developments and activity, including a discussion on different legislation introduced in 2023 and the House of Representatives Bipartisan Working Group on Paid Family Leave.
