"Coping With Shifts in ADA Regulations"
Minh Vu’s article, “Coping With Shifts in ADA Regulations,” was published in the July 22, 2010 issue of Lodging Hospitality. Minh’s article reported how the Obama administration’s increased resources devoted to civil rights matters has resulted in a flurry of regulatory and enforcement activities relating to Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
According to Minh, "This statute imposes many obligations on lodging owners and operators pertaining to guests with disabilities. The list of obligations continues to grow, and the hospitality industry should take note in order to develop a cost-effective compliance and risk management strategy." She explains that the public accommodation industry may be required to modify their websites, making them accessible to people who are blind or have limited vision. Minh also explains that there will also be expanded rules regarding reservation polices and service animals but most importantly, new rules for accessible bathrooms in each room. To avoid an investigation, she recommends that hotel owners and operators ensure guests receive the accessible rooms they reserved, have a written service animal policy, and purchase communication kits for the hearing impaired.
