Robert Whitman was quoted in two November 3 stories from Human Resource Executive on the potential legal problems the so-called gig economy poses to today's HR leaders. Whitman said that perhaps the most important "best practice" when it comes to using independent contractors is having a written agreement between both parties that clearly explains the relationship. He says the agreement should specify that it's an independent-contractor relationship, that the person isn't entitled to benefits, will be supplying his or her own equipment and supplies, will be setting his or her own schedule and will be retaining control over the methods of how the task will be performed.
